Abstract

This paper pays homage to Emeritus Professor Kashim Ibrahim Tala, an intellectual giant whose scholarship and mentorship have indelibly shaped Cameroonian and African literature. More than a chronicler of oral traditions, Tala emerges as a cultural cartographer who mapped the intersections of place, space, and identity, demonstrating that African orature is not a peripheral inheritance but a central pillar of world literature. Anchored in a qualitative and interpretive research design, the study draws from Tala’s published works, lectures, archival materials, and the testimonies of his students and colleagues, complemented by critical secondary sources. The analysis is guided by an integrated theoretical framework: Cultural Geography provides the main lens, while Orality Theory, Postcolonial Studies, Memory Studies, and Sociocultural Mentorship enrich the interpretive process. The paper highlights Tala’s pioneering insistence that landscapes and storytelling spaces are active forces of cultural preservation, his success in bridging Anglophone and Francophone traditions, and his unrivalled role as a mentor who nurtured generations of African scholars. It argues that Tala’s life work represents a sustained act of intellectual decolonisation, reclaiming African voices, memories, and spaces from marginalisation. Ultimately, this tribute situates Tala as more than a scholar: he is a pillar of African intellectual heritage, a bridge-builder across traditions, and a custodian of cultural memory whose influence endures as both inspiration and challenge to future scholars.
